What should you do when you are assigned your first tuition assignment?

You have just received your first ever tuition job. How do you act or what do you do when teaching tuition for the first time? This article is here to solve all your problems and answer your questions!

Firstly, always make it a point to talk to the parent of the student over the phone. This way, you can gauge how the parents are, their personality, character etc. Ask questions about the history of your potential student.

For example, his marks for English exam last year etc. If possible, talk to your student. This way, the student has a chance to be more relaxed and comfortable towards you. Remember that its not only you who is nervous but also the student!


When entering the student's home for the first time, remember to smile, smile and smile. Never never go in with a sullen face! Talk cordially to the parents and to the student. Explain to the parents how you are going to teach their child. For example, using diagrams, mindmaps, mnemonics etc.

When sitting down with the student at the table, the first thing you should find out is what are the subjects he is weak at and which chapters in particular he is having trouble with. Ask him about his studying habits and patterns.

During the first lesson, do not immediately coach him intensively. Instead, give him exercises to do - exercises that will let you gauge his ability at at the particular subject.

Try and find out if he has any problems at school. What are the difficulties he faces at school etc. Do not admonish or scold him if he does any mistakes on the exercises you gave him but instead smile and gently point out his mistakes.

But always remember that the first lesson is the one which creating a lasting impression on the parents and the student. Hence, take care with your appearance and always be punctual!! Below are some simple tips for your first lesson.

- Be punctual
- Dress neatly (do not wear singlets, shorts)
- Smile, smile and smile
- Find out the education history of the student
- Find out his weaknesses and strengths
- Give him encouragement whenever possible
- Ask him about his goals in life and explain what is needed to achieve these goals
- Draw up a study time-table as a guide for the student
- Always plan beforehand what you want to teach on that particular day
